Frequently asked questions

Honest answers about what we do, what we don't do, and how the cancellation process actually works.

General

What is CancelSolar.org?
CancelSolar.org is an educational resource . We help homeowners understand their solar agreements and — when appropriate — connect them with independent consumer-protection law firms. We are not a law firm; we don't provide legal advice or represent clients in court.
Are you a law firm?
No. We are a consumer-advocacy and educational organization. When a homeowner's situation appears to warrant legal review, we refer them to one of several independent law firms we have vetted. The attorney-client relationship is between the homeowner and the law firm directly.
How is CancelSolar different from the solar company that sold me my contract?
We work for you. We are not affiliated with any solar manufacturer, installer, financing company, or lessor. Our purpose is to help homeowners understand their rights under federal and state consumer-protection laws.
Is the initial review really free?
Yes. There is no charge to call, email, or use our eligibility form. The independent attorney's first evaluation of your case is also free. If you decide to engage that attorney, they will provide a clear written fee agreement before any work begins.

Eligibility

I missed the 3-day cancellation window. Am I out of luck?
Not necessarily. The 3-day federal "cooling-off" rule is one of many consumer-protection mechanisms. Depending on your state and the conduct of the seller, your contract may still be challengeable years later — for example under deceptive-trade-practice laws, elder abuse statutes, or contract-formation defenses. An attorney review is the only way to know for sure.
What kinds of solar contracts can be challenged?
Leases, loans, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and cash purchases can all potentially be challenged depending on the facts. The most common issues we see involve misrepresented savings, undisclosed escalator clauses, hidden fees, high-pressure sales tactics, and exploitation of vulnerable homeowners.
Does it matter what state I live in?
Yes. State consumer-protection laws vary considerably. We currently work with attorneys licensed in most U.S. states; if your state isn't covered we'll tell you up front and may be able to refer you elsewhere.
I'm behind on payments. Should I keep paying while you review?
In most cases, yes — continue paying until an attorney advises you otherwise. Stopping payment can have credit and legal consequences. CancelSolar.org does not advise either paying or non-paying; that's a decision to make with a licensed attorney based on your specific case.

The process

How long does the process take?
Initial intake review usually happens within one business day. Attorney evaluation typically takes 1–3 weeks. If you choose to move forward, resolution time varies widely (a few weeks to several months) depending on the complexity, your state, and the response of the solar company.
What documents will I need?
Eventually: your signed solar contract, any addenda, your most recent bill or statement, and any sales materials or recorded calls if you have them. None of these are required to start a conversation with us.
Will challenging my contract hurt my credit?
A formal legal challenge by itself does not directly affect your credit. However, related decisions (e.g., stopping payment) can. An attorney will help you weigh credit implications before any major step.

Privacy & SMS

Will you share or sell my information?
No. We never sell personal information. Phone numbers collected on our forms are not shared with third parties for marketing purposes. We share details with our network attorneys only when you've affirmatively chosen to have your case referred. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Do I have to opt in to text messages?
No. SMS opt-in is entirely optional. The eligibility form has a single, unchecked box for case-update texts that's independent of submitting the form. You can submit it without checking the box and we'll respond by email instead.
How do I stop text messages?
Reply STOP to any text from us at any time and you will be unsubscribed immediately. Reply HELP for help. See our SMS Terms for the complete policy.
What is your message frequency?
Case-related texts only, as needed — typically 1–6 messages over the course of an active case. We don't send marketing or newsletter texts.
Who pays the attorney?
If you choose to engage one of our network law firms, the firm will discuss its fee structure with you in writing before any work begins. Depending on the case this may be a flat fee, contingency fee, or hourly. CancelSolar.org does not charge homeowners for the intake or referral.
Can I get my money back from the solar company?
Sometimes — but it depends entirely on the facts of your case and applicable law. We never guarantee recovery, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does.
Is reading this site or submitting a form legal advice?
No. Information on this website is general consumer education, not legal advice. Submitting our eligibility form does not create an attorney-client relationship.
